- Native to Mexico, the Cuphea Big Cigar is a rounded, densely branched evergreen upright bush that grows approximately 2-3’ tall as well as wide. The bright red flowers are tipped with a white rim accented by tiny blackish purple petals which is purportedly suggestive of a lit cigar, hence its name. This is commonly used as edging to walkways and paths or as container plant on decks, patios, porches, or even in hanging baskets. The blooms keep upright until frozen and freezes to the ground in Southern states yet pops up again next Spring very nicely. The tubular shape of the bright red flowers contain nectar which is highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Some might call it nature’s candy corn!
