- Native to South America, the Yellow Milkweed is an herbaceous, tender evergreen perennial that is yellow with a yellow hood coloring that has been naturalized worldwide. The genus of all milkweed familial plants derived from the Greek god Asclepias, the god of medicine. The medicinal properties come from the roots which are used as an expectorant for pneumonia, pleurisy, and other lung problems or as a poultice to treat ringworm. It typically grows as a subshrub to 3’ tall with upright stems clad with pointed, opposite lanceolate leaves and showy flowers that are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies and bees!
